You would not believe your eyes if ten million fireflies lit up the world as I fell asleep...

Julie and I arrived in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee just as the summer sun was setting behind the Great Smokey Mountains. Just outside of town we began noticing small quick flashes of yellow lights that seemed to be dancing around just above the foliage along side the road. What are those crazy lights? We excitedly realized that they were fireflies, this was the first time either of us had actually seen lightning bugs (as we call um' down 'ere in the south).

Although they seem amazing and almost magical from a distance, fireflies are a little creepy up close.

A natural phenomenon happens every year around the middle of June, the fireflies will begin to light up in unison. The light travels like waves through the forest and not one firefly will light up at the wrong time. This only occurs in two place on Earth, an area in Southeast Asia and right here in the Smokey Mountains. How or why the fireflies do this is a compete mystery.
As we sat along the roadside watching the fireflies we thought it seemed appropriate to play the hit song by Owl City called "Fireflies." Apparently offending the little bugs, soon we notice a significant decline in the amount of dancing lights surrounding us. We quickly turned off the music and almost just as fast the fireflies resumed lighting up the evening sky.
Pigeon Forge is full of exciting attractions, including the world famous Dollywood Theme Park, carnival rides, go carts, an upside down building, a dinosaur adventure and Dixie Stampede Dinner Show. However, if I were to advise someone on what is best to do in the area I would recommend bringing a camp chair and driving into the Smokey Mountains to find a quiet spot on the roadside and watching the fireflies put on their show.

We love our nightly entertainment. Karlee loves to see how many she can catch in a night....she always releases them when she's done.
